Identifying the ‘names’ on charters can be an exercise in wishful thinking sometimes. However, I do like Bailey’s suggestion that Ælfwynn was the recipient of a grant of land from King Eadred and that the grant was at the instigation of Eadgifu, Edward the Elder’s 3rd wife. ‘Pensioning’ Ælfwynn (probably aged 60 at the time of the grant) off doesn’t make up for the fact that her kingdom was stolen from her but it is better than the alternative. The slightly ominous wording of the ASC always suggested to me that they quietly did away with her.
