Can PASE help with the name Breguswith in suggesting an origin? The dream vision as you say is a literary trope. I wonder if other early English female saints are similarly treated.

Nothing on PASE that I could find! I recall Christine Fell has written about Breguswith possibly being pregnant during the dream sequence and the topos of the saint-prediction dream, though I haven't been able to access her work in the last few weeks due to Covid!

I only have Fell's Anglo-Saxon Women and the Impact of 1066 and there was nothing in there. Happy to try and help in any other way. I also remember reading something about pregnancy prophecies and if I come across anything I will revert.

Sorry Florence but I don't think that it's at all clear that Breguswith, Hild and Herewith did not accompany Hereric into exile in Elmet. Bede is silent on the topic and it would be far more likely that they would seek political asylum as a family, particularly as they would have no idea as to when or indeed whether they could return to either part of Northumbria in safety.
