I've just been writing, for a forthcoming book, about Mercia's Early medieval queens and royal women - many of them progressive monastic entrepreneurs. Conspicuous as the consort of King Offa is Cynethryth, the first English queen to have her own coinage minted, and participant in a long-running legal dispute over her ownership of Cookham minster. Northumbria's queens, too , are politically conspicuous - West Saxon queens are sadly much less visible. Enjoying your blogs and podcasts - thanks.
